Your First Beekeeping Hive

Submitted by: Frank Reese

When you’re working with bees the main focus is going to be the beekeeping hive. Bee hives have greatly improved over the years, making them more productive and easier to work with.

The most common beekeeping hive out there is the Langstroth hive, especially if you live in the United States. It is classified as a movable frame bee hive.

The combs are held within a rectangular wooden frame. There are typically nine or ten of these combs inside the frame.

Each frame doesn t have a top or bottom. The idea is to have the combs hang freely. The combs are made from plastic or wax sheets.

Using the sheets as a foundation makes it easier for the bees to produce wax and honeycomb. The bees then deposit honey and pollen into the cells of each comb. The box is designed to easily be able to remove the frames full of honey to be extracted.

Even though the Langstroth is the most popular choice in the U.S., you might consider a top-bar option instead. These provide a bar across the top of the structure so honey bees can attach and hang wax combs from it.

Keep in mind; if you choose a top-bar hive you can no longer use the combs after the honey has been extracted. If you utilize this method you will find that it offers a lower production of honey. The upside to this beekeeping hive is that the clear yellow combs offer the highest quality of honey, so you can charge more for it or just enjoy a better tasting honey.

The beekeeping hive you choose will really come down to preference, but it’s not the most important thing to consider. First off, before the beekeeper decides to keep bees on their property they must research the local restrictions to keeping bees found in some areas.

You should also consider the amount of room that is available on their property and the placement of the hive. You definitely don’t want to place them near your home or a recreational area. Is there anyone in the local area that is allergic to bee stings? A beekeeping hive should be far enough away from everyone so no one can be harmed.

The bee hive also needs to be placed near nectar and pollen sources in order to give the bees easy access to a food source. Some beekeepers use bees solely to pollinate their crops.

Place your hive near a source of fresh water. This can be a man-made water source or natural.

Do you need to worry about possible predators or intruders? Gathering free honey is something animals do all the time and sometimes people too.

Make sure your hive is easily accessible throughout the whole year and that it is also sufficiently protected from your extreme winter and/or summer weather. Although bees are most active during certain times of the year, beekeeping is a job that lasts throughout every season of the year.
